Christlife Posture: Trusting God's Wisdom

Topic: How should I think about technology's place in my life?

Suggested Approach: Choose 1 thing from each of the three boxes

OR Choose 1 from media or Reflection + 1 from Scripture

Media Excursions         Watch/read/listen and be ready to discuss Q's

Still Image

  • Moses and the Tablets (from the slideshow “Technology, Media and Ministry” by Rev. Greg Klimovitz )  What do you think this image is trying to communicate?  How do you feel about this image?  Why would/does God use modern technology to communicate his truth?

Video Clips

  • Yes (Eden Ministry) It’s interesting to see this depiction of a familiar story--surrounded by modern technology, yet undistracted by it.  Why do you think that is so? What does it tell you about how you think about technology?

  • 3 Generations (Bird Strategy, Inc) The fourth (Young Adult) generation seems skipped in these interviews.  How do you think they would answer the question of free time use?  Which answers do you relate to more?  What does the use of technology use tend to displace in your life?

  • Skit: Stop and Listen (OneTimeBlind) What is the level of distraction in your life? How much does technology (of any kind) contribute to that?

Song

Video Teaching

  • Billy Graham on Technology, Faith and Human Shortcomings part 1 (Censored4Truth) What perspectives does Rev. Graham have that help you think about the good or evil connected to technology?

  • What do you Share (Be the Bee #22) How overt are you in sharing about your faith over Social Media?  What is the balance between modeling Christianity and broadcasting Christianity? What is your own rule of thumb for what you post or don’t post?

Articles

  • How Technology is Changing Our World (Glenn Brooke)  In his long list of changes, pick out three you think are positive and three you are unsure about.  Critique (all 6) these from the point of view of a Christian worldview.

  • Blog: Is theology a technology?  (Clint Schnekloth)  What are your thoughts about the statement “theology constricts our view of the world?” After reading this blog, what do think the relationship between theology and technology are?

  • Blog: Would Jesus use an iPhone? (Mark Steele)  Do you agree with his conclusion about Jesus? What was helpful about this article for you?

Podcast

  • Developing a Theology of Technology (Brian Houseman) As a parent, what kind of thought have you given to how to use or relate to technology in your family in a God honoring way? What insights did you gain from this podcast?

Reflection Options

Journal  (Reflect on one or more of these questions)

  • Write about a time when technology enhanced your relationship with God or with another person. Now write about a time when it detracted from your relationship with God or another person.  What facilitated the difference?

  • Brainstorm a number of ways that you personally might use technology to further or enhance your witness to others.

  • Write a “rule of life” statement that reflects what you want your relationship with technology (as a whole or some aspect of it) to be ordered by. Or find a verse you want to use as a centering truth in how you approach or use technology.

Quote Interaction (Interact by agreeing, disagreeing or otherwise engaging with the quote/quotes)

  • “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”  Albert Einstein

  • “Science and technology revolutionize our lives, but memory, tradition and myth frame our response.”  Arthur Schlesinger

  • “Technology is a gift of God. After the gift of life it is perhaps the greatest of God's gifts. It is the mother of civilizations, of arts and of sciences.”   Freeman Dyson

Reading & Reflection from the book, Shaping The Journey of Emerging Adults:

  • Read the section “Friendships” (146-148). Awareness exercise: Make a list of the kinds of technology you currently use. Ask the other person if they are willing to list theirs.  Listen to each other explain why you chose each of these technologies. How did you decide they were important to add to your life?

  • Read “Time Constraints and Technology” (p. 193-194).  Analyze how much of your technology use is a time saver versus a time waster.  Are you or do you know any “prosumers”? What do they create and for what purpose?

 Explore Scripture

Meditate on one or more of the following passages. Always look them up in context.  Take some time to really explore the verse in relation to this topic.  See if you can find any examples of ancient "technology" or wisdom these verses have for how we view & relate to technology.  Make a note of what you discover to share later.  See "Learn More About Ways to Study Scripture" below for help in getting the most out of the verse.
