Christlife Posture: Submitting to God's Love and Leading

Topic: Trusting God for My Future Career

Suggested Approach: Choose 1 thing from each of the three boxes

OR Choose 1 from Media or Reflection + 1 from Scripture

Media Excursions (Choose 1 or more & watch/read/listen and be ready to discuss Q's)

Still Image/Painting

  • The Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog (Friedrich) Times of transition often have us facing the unknown.  As you ponder this painting, what things in your future are clouded by fog right now? How can you release those things into God’s hands for this moment?

Video Clip (Inspiration)

  • Keep Walking (Will Edison) Which of these words of encouragement give you help or hope as you move toward the future? Watch it until you find some!

Song

  • Hold it Up to the Light (David Wilcox) What emotions in this song can you relate to when you think of your future?  What do you think he means by “hold it up to the light”?

Article

  • Wanted: A Meaningful Job (Hugh Whelchel)  Which of his three perspectives on what makes a job meaningful was most prevalent in your family or other influential people in your life? Which perspective is closest to the one you hold currently?

Blog

  • Your Passion and the World's Greatest Need (Jimmy Larche) How much have you been affected by the myth that "one day the perfect job is going to give your life that elusive joy and world-changing purpose"? What objections do you have to working in "uninspiring" jobs?

Online Teaching

  • How to Get your Dream Job (from How to Adult)  As you watch this video, which actions can you take now while you are still in college?  Are there any steps you think she is missing that can help you prepare for a future dream job?

Reflection Options

Journal  (reflect on one or more of these questions)

  • What lifestyle, financial or career goals do you think would help you move toward trusting God with your future?

  • In your understanding, what is or should be the connection between your identity and your career choice?  What is the balance between allowing a job to stretch you and finding one that fits you?

  • Journal about the one of the following that is hard for you and one that is easier:

  • Believing that you are prepared upon graduating for the career you have chosen.

  • Trusting God to lead you to the right job.

  • Trusting God to provide for you as you search for the right job.

  • Trusting that there is a job you will find fulfilling.

Quote Interaction (Interact by agreeing, disagreeing or otherwise engaging with the quote/quotes)

  • "I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble."  Helen Keller

  • “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Abraham Lincoln

  • “Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • “I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.”  Stephen Covey

Reading & Reflection from the book, Shaping The Journey of Emerging Adults

  • Read “The Development of Emerging Adults” (pp. 26-29) and the paragraph on “Career Instability” (p. 31).  Which of the challenges in these pages are you most affected by?  What is helpful to be aware of in regard to pursuing a career?

  • Mentor: Read through the Discernment, Intentionality and Reflection ideas at the end of chapter 7 (pp. 119-124). Which ideas seem relevant to explore with the young adult?  What was your experience in finding a career? Which of these ideas would have been helpful to you (so you can share about your experience, not in order to prescribe what they need).

  • Mentor: Read “Empower them with needed skills for lifestyle, financial and career goals” (p. 203).  Do a search for some resources (online or ask around) that are helpful in the areas the young adult struggles with.  Look at them together at your next meeting to see what they have to offer. (Read the bullet point before this one to remind yourself on the posture that would be most helpful with an anxious adult).

  • Mentor: Read “Choosing an Eternal Legacy” (pp. 220-222). Think about your own career and its place in your life story.  Be ready to share what you learned from this section (for yourself) next time you meet.

Explore Scripture

Meditate on one or more of the following passages. Always look them up in context.  Take some time to really explore the verse in relation to this topic.  What can you learn about how to approach your future or why God can be trusted as you move forward?  Make a note of what you discover to share later.  See "Learn More About Ways to Study Scripture" below for help in getting the most out of the verse.
