Reflection Options

Journal  (reflect on one or more of these questions)

  • What lifestyle, financial or career goals do you think would help you move toward trusting God for your future?

  • In your understanding, what is or should be the connection between your identity and your career choice?  What is the balance between allowing a job to stretch you and finding one that fits you?

  • Journal about the one of the following that is hard for you and one that is easier:

  • Believing that you are prepared upon graduating for the career you have chosen.

  • Trusting God to lead you to the right job.

  • Trusting God to provide for you as you search for the right job.

  • Trusting that there is a job that you would find fulfilling.

Quote Interaction (Interact by agreeing, disagreeing or otherwise engaging with the quote/quotes)

  • "I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble."  Helen Keller

  • "Love what you do and do what you love." Ray Bradbury

  • “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Abraham Lincoln

  • “Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • “I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.”  Stephen Covey

Reading & Reflection from the book, Shaping The Journey of Emerging Adults

  • Read “The Development of Emerging Adults” (p. 26-29) and the paragraph on “Career Instability” (p. 31).  Which of the challenges in these pages are you most affected by?  What is helpful to be aware of in regard to deciding when to stay or leave a particular job?

  • Read the case study of Sally and Barb (p. 199-201)  AND “Help Emerging adults recognize stability…(p. 204). What life stage factors (marriage, family, children) affect your choice of work? What kinds of limitations do you experience as "curse" vs. "gift" in job transitions?

  • Mentor: Read through the Discernment, Intentionality and Reflection ideas at the end of chapter 7 (p. 119-124).  What ideas seem relevant to explore with the young adult?  What was your experience in finding a career? Which of these ideas would have been helpful to you (so you can share about your experience, not in order to prescribe what they need).

  • Mentor: Read “Empower them with needed skills for lifestyle, financial and career goals” p. 203.  Do a search for some resources (online or ask around) that are helpful in the areas the young adult struggles with.  Look together at them and what they offer in the next meeting. (Read the bullet point before this one to remind yourself on the posture that would be most helpful with an anxious adult).

  • Mentor: Read “Choosing an Eternal Legacy” (p. 220-222). Think about your own career and it’s place in your life’s story.  Be ready to share what you learned from this section (for yourself) next time you meet.
